I am not in a good news new year. I was told in September that I needed either
an arthroscopy or elbow replacement. The decision would depend on a C.T. scan.
Also I discussed going privately as I have been having trouble for over one year.
If I couldn't go private it would be January / February. I decided to ring on monday
to see where I am on the list.
Imagine my horror to find that my C.T.scan has been mislaid and nothing has been
done since the initial appointment.
It is bad enough to be told your pain will continue for the seeable future. To be told
we aren't doing anything about it makes my mad. Do they not realise our lives are on hold
with expensive drugs, for RA and all the depression, heart prblems, kidney problems
am not usually a moaner,by golly they'll get a shock this time. Iwonder who will get the blame?
Will calm down soon................Anne

Oh Anne - that's terrible. No wonder you're so cross. Now you've got it off your chest, use that anger positively to push for a better service. If they really have lost your CT scan, then you will need to push to get another one done - ask to be re-referred. But I thought that these days the results are all on computer - so they can't lose them - maybe someone has been incompetant and overlooked it. What is the process for handling complaints at your hospital - it should tell you on their web site who to contact.

Good luck and try not to stay upset for too long, because that will make your pain feel even worse. Best wishes - Sylvia xx

RESULT !!!
Thanks for your comments. I contacted the PALS at the hospital
but apart from being sympathetic didn't think there would be a satisfactory
answer.

I had a phone call today saying that because of my input the
hospital are going to trial 2 yes 2 methods of letting the consultant
know when scans have taken place. In conversation she said that
some patients may think that because they haven't heard anything
there is nothing wrong. i.e. maybe a false negative.

It just shows we need to have the courage to speak up. It may
help someone else if not ourselves. Phew what a result....... Anne

That's a fantastic result Anne - a huge HUGE well done to you. Obviously it shouldn't have happened in the first place, but mistakes do happen and at least a positive has come out of it - I hope you feel very proud of yourself and thank you for sharing this.

Much love - Sylvia xx

Consultant and Anaesthetist. I've heard it all now...........................

The CONSULTANT HAS GONE ON A YEARS SABATICAL.

This stress can't be good for me. Anne

I am STILL waiting because when I went for pre-op assessment with the
anaesthetist he rejected me because of heart and lungs problems after
30 years of the blasted RA. Because the priivate hosp. doesn't have a
high dependency unit or even intensive care he wouldn't be prepared to
risk it. That really made me feel good. Every time I see a new person it
takes about a month from referral to appointment and outcome, at least.

Now I am back at my old hospital, new consultant, and its one in special
measures as of yesterday. Can it get worse?????

Last March I was full of hope but heyho, smiled too soon.. Still need the op.
but now more scared. My knees were straightforward as I was able to have
epidurals. Its not good from the shoulders down!!!!!!! Anne

This is awful Anne, you have been waiting and waiting. I have been told I can only be operated on where there is an HDU and intensive care too, and this is sensible and reassuring.

The special measures is scary, but maybe the hospital will be more attentive to it's failures and maybe get some help to improve? Some schools which have been in special measures are now some of the best - but it does take time.

Is there any alternative to a GA for your elbows?

Loads of luck with the new consultant and I hope he can explore all the options for you.

Take good care,
Love Lizxx

What a terrible time you are going through Anne.

Is it possible for you to have the op with Regional anaesthetic (nerve blocks in your arm)? I had hand surgery this way and it was fantastic, didn't feel a thing and it provided fantastic post operative pain relief. They can give you some sedative if you want to be asleep during the op. I am seeing shoulder/elbow surgeon next month as I need a new elbow and shoulder and will be asking if the op can be done without a GA, as I react really badly to anaesthetic.

Hope you can find a way forward.
Best wishes

Rebecca

Oh Anne, you really are having a tough time of it, and your patience sorely tried. I do hope a way forward can be found for you, so that your much-needed surgery can be done.

Take care,

Kathleen x

This is just ridiculous, Anne. Would you be prepared to travel for surgery? You now have the option of having your op at a hospital of your choice. Am thinking Bath or Wrightington, both centres of excellence for RA patients in need of surgery. Wrightington replaced our old friend Gwenda's elbow with a nerve block. Seems as if your GP isn't fighting your corner properly. xx

Hi, Jean,
I really can't blame my excellent GP as it was my Rheumy Consultant who referred me
in the first place.!! The GP rang the other week to speak to my husband. I answered
and he asked if I okay. Yes said I,, I'm fine. Just as we all do when caught off guard.
I didn't like to ring back!!! Silly me, it must be my age. Did you have a good day on
Sunday? Anne
